Common Subaru Gearbox / Transmission Issues: Automatic and Manual

Check if your subaru shows one or more common signs of transmission issues:

Jerks and jolts during acceleration/braking — in Subaru Forester, Outback, XV (Lineartronic CVT), light throttle or release often causes jerks: the car may stumble or suddenly lurch forward.
Slipping at start — during acceleration, RPM rises but the car gains speed very slowly. This is typical for CVTs with worn belts or low oil pressure (also noted in some Subaru automatics).
CVT overheating — AT Oil Temp light or “SLOW DOWN” message on Forester/Outback indicates fluid overheating. Common during hard driving in heat or uphill — requires rest, oil level check, and radiator cleaning.
Long delay when engaging D/R — after shifting to Drive or Reverse, the car may hesitate before moving. This start “lag” is typical of valve body or solenoid problems, especially when warm.
Noises, vibrations, and error codes — Lineartronic CVTs (and even 4-/5-speed Subaru automatics like Legacy) may produce whining, humming, or grinding (especially during acceleration or coasting). Signs of bearing, chain, or gear wear, often with flashing Check Engine and pressure/solenoid error codes.
