Common Land rover Gearbox / Transmission Issues: Automatic and Manual

Automatic transmission faults (Discovery, Freelander, etc.) — felt as jerks and shudders when shifting, delayed response, and slipping. Often the Check Engine light appears, with harsh shifts during gear changes.
Torque converter problems — on Discovery 3/4 (2.7 TD) and some other models, short vibrations or rattling in the transmission may occur at 60–80 km/h. Symptoms include body vibration and noise near the gearbox.
Overheating and oil leaks — with low or old oil, the transmission overheats: strong burning smell, harsh gear shifts, slipping, and unusual noises in the AT. These issues are especially common after long heavy-duty operation.
Clutch and CVT/AT component wear — in Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport (with automatics), over time harsh jolts during acceleration, humming, and vibrations may appear. This often indicates worn clutch packs or bearings in the transmission.
