Common Mini Gearbox / Transmission Issues: Automatic and Manual

Mini Cooper (CVT Punch, R50–R56) — sluggish acceleration and “judder” when the CVT slips under load. The engine revs rise suddenly while the car responds slowly, with constant humming and possible transmission fault codes.
Mini Cooper (CVT Punch) — sudden loss of drive with a loud bang under the car. This indicates CVT belt breakage: the car rattles loudly, then won’t move at all, with sensors detecting heavy metal shavings in the oil.
Mini Cooper S (Steptronic TF-60 6-speed AT) — delays and jerks during shifts, especially under acceleration; clutch packs often burn out. The transmission may overheat: sluggish pedal response, jerky gear engagement, and reduced performance.
Mini John Cooper Works (6-speed DCT) — jolts and jerks during aggressive acceleration, gears hanging after hard driving. The dual-clutch system cools poorly: after “hot” driving, the first shifts are very sensitive to sharp loads.
Mini Cooper (manual, all generations) — rapid clutch wear. Main signs: slipping at start, gears skipping, weak throttle response, and burning smell of the worn disc. Manual R50–R56 models are especially prone after ~100–150k km.
