Common Ford Gearbox / Transmission Issues: Automatic and Manual

Check if your ford shows one or more signs of transmission issues:

Knocking and humming while driving — on low gears (1–3), the car may “click” or grind, a common symptom of worn gears, bearings, or teeth in Ford transmissions (especially PowerShift).
Jerks during acceleration/braking — at low RPM (up to ~1300), PowerShift often shudders: sudden throttle or release causes noticeable jolts, a classic sign of clutch wear or solenoid faults.
Dual clutch wear — in PowerShift gearboxes, the dual clutch typically wears out by 60–100k km. With critical wear, even/odd gears may be lost (skipping gears), and shifts come with strong jolts.
Seal leaks — premature wear of transmission seals leads to ATF leakage and oil reaching clutch components, causing slipping. Such cases require seal replacement and restoring tightness.
TCM and solenoid failure — failure of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or PowerShift solenoids causes unpredictable jerks, sticking, and missed shifts. In some cases, no error codes appear on the dashboard, making diagnostics difficult.
