Common Mercedes Gearbox / Transmission Issues: Automatic and Manual

Harsh jolts when shifting — many owners complain of a strong “kick” when going from 2nd to 3rd gear, a common problem in Mercedes automatics (especially 5- and 7-speed gearboxes of the 722 series).
Noise when moving the selector to P/N — in Mercedes cars, shifting the lever from D to P or N can produce a distinct noise, one of the classic symptoms of torque converter or solenoid problems in the automatic transmission.
High RPM when engaging 5th gear — on older Mercedes automatics (722.5 series), shifting from 4th to 5th may cause the engine revs to rise significantly, a sign of burnt clutches in 5th gear.
Limp mode due to overheating — with insufficient oil cooling (e.g. clogged radiator), the Mercedes 722.6 transmission may get stuck in limp mode, operating only in one gear. This also causes slipping and jolts while driving.
